 Iowa State University
Iowa State is a large, prestigious university with a friendly hometown personality. Its 26,000 students choose from 100+ majors, study with world class scholars and keep more than 500 student organizations going strong. Half of ISU freshman get an early boost in academic success by participating in Iowa State's highly touted learning communities. Learning communities are innovative academic programs that bring students together to study and learn. So many students study or work abroad that ISU is 18th in the nation in that category. Iowa State ranks second among universities in R&D 100 awards, given by R&D magazine for top technologies. Iowa State boasts the inventor of the electronic digital computer, top-ranked career services, one of the nation's best tech transfer programs and a gorgeous central campus.
The University of Iowa
Home to more than 29,000 students and some of the nation's top scholars and researchers, the University of Iowa offers more than 100 areas of study on a vibrant and diverse campus. Students get a comprehensive and quality education at an affordable price—still the lowest in the Big Ten—and placement rates for Iowa graduates are above 90 percent. Adding to the population are more than a million visitors each year who come to enjoy cultural events and art exhibits, to attend Big Ten athletic events, and to participate in the many conferences and educational programs scheduled at the University year-round.
Established in 1847, Iowa has won international recognition for its wealth of achievements in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Iowa was the first U.S. public university to admit men and women on an equal basis. The University has world renowned research programs in genetics, hydraulics, and speech and hearing, and has recorded major innovations in biocatalysis, biomedical engineering, and biomedical sciences. Iowa scientists, including James Van Allen, have been pioneers in space research, designing and building research instruments for more than 50 successful U.S. satellites and space probes. The University of Iowa has also developed the most technically advanced driving simulator in the world.
The University of Iowa & Iowa State University became PLTW Affiliates in 2006.
